Hi.

In a grant discussing for funding this year's WLM competition in
Pakistan, a member of the Grant Advisory Committee (GAC) brought up an
idea I thought worth thinking about: offering one or two prizes,
alongside the major top photo prizes, to those submitting good photos
as well as creating/expanding Wikipedia articles about those objects.

The grant discussion is here:

As you can read in the discussion above, the organizers would prefer
not to (which is perfectly fine), but since they mentioned, as one
reason, that it would stand out among other WLMs, I was wondering if
that is indeed the case, i.e. if no other WLM competition offers
prizes on this basis, or, indeed, on other thematic focuses (e.g.
"best photo by a newbie"?)

I'm not strongly claiming it should definitely be done, nor that it
would be a good fit everywhere if it were done.  I'm just interested
in floating the notion and hearing your thoughts.

This is in principle a good idea, but as an editor doing quite some cleanup in the English Wikipedia I would ike to note that Pakistani geo articles have really very low quality there. I am not sure an average WLM participant from Pakistan has a better writing skills than the average Wikipedia Pakistani article editor, and I am nore sure this is not going to result in a lot of mess in one of the troublesome Wikipedia areas. I would certainly prefer another country to start.

Cheers
