HARD: USB thumb drives

Is there anything important to know about these? Or can you just go for the 
cheapest? I've looked at ten million reviews and I can't for the life of me 
figure out whether any of it means anything...

Also, how long can you reasonably expect data to stay intact on one of 
those?  Do people mostly use them for transfer, or for temporary backup too?
