Is there anything important to know about these? Or can you just go for the cheapest? I've looked at ten million reviews and I can't for the life of me figure out whether any of it means anything...
Also, how long can you reasonably expect data to stay intact on one of those? Do people mostly use them for transfer, or for temporary backup too?

Another thing you might want to consider is to purchase an SD card. These are postage stamp sized cards used by most digital cameras and various other items. Then get this neat little card reader that completely covers it and plugs into USB:

Then you have the best of both worlds. If you buy a thumb drive, all you have is a thumb drive. Don't get me wrong, they are great. We use them all the time. However, using the SD card is far more versatile. We have recently purchased a few digital cameras. All of which come with SD cards. We usually upgrade the cards so we have these smaller sized cards floating around. Buy a couple of those handy card readers (about the same length as our thumb drives but a little fatter) and they are useful again. Also, there are MP3 players out there that accept SD cards to expand their capacity or those that have no on board memory and only take SD cards. PDA's usually have an SD card slot (mine did, no longer have it though). With SD cards, you can also set the switch and secure the data so you cannot accidentally delete it.
Just a thought. Thumb drives are great though (our experience is that brand really means nothing). SD Card/Card reader is even better :-)
