What!?!?! The service packs being discussed are for WinXP. No way will
either SP1 or SP2 install on Win98SE.
Oh my, I have not explained well.
_I_ happily use 98se and Norton SW. I don't like XP. _I_ have no interest
in SP2 for _my_ system.
_I_ don't have problems -- except for the interminable spam -- which the
government seems unwilling to deal with -- But I don't see a limitation in
downloading SP1 and/or SP2 to my system for use elsewhere.
Is that correct?
The organization I often work with uses many XP systems over a large area,
but in a very controlled fashion --allegedly.. We/they used to use an
intranet for intra organizational communication with no connection to the
Internet and we never had grief of any kind.
We are now switching to some sort of strange limited/filtered Internet
connection which I don't understand -- and some have been receiving
viruses. The organization is allegedly working on protection, and most of
us have recently installed virus protection, however, some of us are
saying that we should "upgrade" to SP2 which has firewall protection of
some sort.
Hence my original question: Is SP2 worth the pain? I take the answer to be
"Yes". The question arose because my previous understanding was that SP1
and/or SP2 gave grief.
Now I hear here that we have to install SP1 first. I don't know if our
systems have SP1. In any case I can't use the organizations systems to
download.
Do I understand correctly then that I must find an XP system --- plenty are
available at the local college -- download both SP1 and SP2 to a CD and
then visit the various locations about town? And that I can not do this
from my 98se? (I have no interest in SP2 for my system.)
Can I infact download SP1 and/or SP2 installers to a CD? Or do I have to
let Bill meddle with our systems?
That may be a bit clearer.
I am quite willing to be tutored.
