Don't forget about noise as a consideration... The faster they spin, the louder
they generally get as well!! Also, just because they spin faster doesn't always
equate to faster response times. Other factors can come into play like the
number of platters, the size of the cache, etc...
For what it is worth, Maximum PC's current Best of the Best pick is the
Hitachi Deskstar 7K500. It is also the drive they used (x 5) in their Dream
Machine 2005. I don't know if you need 500 GB or want to pay $500 a
piece though. :)
