Not going to recommend anything - the market is so volatile; but please give the list some more clues
1Gb memory = more battery drain How many hours off mains use do you need - A second battery implies a separate charging cradle, or second (second-hand system) Have you considered a second hand system (£500 may get you (MAY) 3 month warrantee 40Gb drive, 1GB memory? 14" screen 1Ghz cpu and windows Pro?) Can you make do with external DVD drive and external USB drive for more storage ( I have vague memories of some IBM systems having a bay that would take a second battery, or a second hard drive) How much weight are you willing to carry and can you manage a system with a large screen - they get very heavy on the arm, or knees, and can get hot too Is the system to be mostly used as a portable system - carried around, or as a desk/table-top system, or mostly where you could have a docking station and large screen Other than Word, what would you use the system for TV? CD playing - quality sound, or just cheap headphones DVD video playing Games Re wireless - would a plug-in USB module be OK, or too fragile Consider connecting one via a short extension cable, (and optional hub) Gonna use the integrated pointer, or a mouse, or trackball Consider 5Gb for XP 2Gb for Office 2Gb workspace for the OS installs - software temp space etc 5Gb space for a DVD 5 image 4Gb more for a DVD 9 image 1Gb workspace for each user 1GB for hibernate file 1GB for pagefile 1Gb for emails and net usage ?Gb for your data Better to have 2 partitions so that you can keep the OS one to a minimum base OS, hiber, page workspace and user controls - Documents and Settings/... that means that the backup image of your partition should fit on a single DVD and there will be space on the other partition for that image to be created before packing it onto a booting recovery DVD platter What else can you think of - Oh yes - lightweight printer? Budget - expected (realistic hoped for limit) and max and do you have a backup system available - say a desktop system for your data to be held on in case your laptop goes walkies with somebody else Will the system - with charger, external devices and leads fit in your normal bag/attaché case, or will it have one labelled 'Apple PC - nick me' Have you considered a desktop and a large PDA, or small tablet type system JimB ----- Original Message ----- From: "Eve Golden" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Sunday, October 30, 2005 9:59 PM Subject: new laptop -- ---------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, mailto: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Is your picture included in the Official Win-Home List Members Profiles Page? http://www.besteffort.com/winhome/Profiles.html If not, write to: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
