How much video memory does your existing laptop have?
Haven't the foggiest. I looked at the specs on the Dell website but can't
find it. I have a vague memory of 2MB. I am positive that I would not have
asked for a more expensive option for that at the time I bought this. How
much should I have for the new one? I don't think the problem is the
resolution. It's 1) that the program has a really hard time loading and 2)
I like to keep millions of thumbnails open when I'm working on graphics
files.
I thought the Toshiba's used the pencil eraser thingy. ;-) FWIW I hate
those things. Also I wouldn't want to get stuck with an Intel processor
when there are so many laptops with AMD processors these days. That wasn't
the case when you bought your last one. If you get one with an AMD
processor you'll have more money left over for the external HD you're
talking about.
Will check all this out. I don't like the eraser thingies either. They give
me cramps in the hands and ruin my typing. I don't know yet who has what
processors. I'm just starting to think about this. As you know I find it
more than a bit traumatic, but I can't wait three years this time. I need a
backup...
Most people that get laptops don't bother with partitioning because they
want to start using the laptop right away & they certainly don't want to
buy Partition Magic to re-partition the drive once. Re-partitioning with a
single HD is of limited value when compared to using an external HD & if
you're going to get an external drive anyway then you may want to forget
the re-partitioning altho that can make backups go quicker. Whether you
re-partition or not you should have all the stuff that you want to backup
in a central location. I prefer mine in C:\My Documents versus XP's
C:\Documents and Settings\User\My Documents. I even install Eudora in My
Documents instead of Program Files just to make backing up email easier &
faster.
I have partition magic (an old one) but am lazy about using it. Would
rather use an external drive, especially bec. it's easier if you have to
reinstall windows, heaven forbid. I do have all my stuff under My
Documents, including Eudora. except for the Desktop, which is mostly
shortcuts but which has to be under Documents and Settings, doesn't it? If
it doesn't, I'd like to move it...
OK. Thanks. Will check 'em out. Any advice welcome. You picked a good one
last time, Wayne! :-)
