Weeee! her we go

Summary -
Machine is to be used as a mobile desktop, but you still have to carry it
so size and weight is still a consideration,

All integrated into the 1 case is not, nor is battery power
Backup you seem to have a good idea, one you can use on any machine -
sensible ain't you!

Don't use it for games, entertainment, or cad/cam 3d graphics,
so do not need a posh, large memory, power hungry video board

But--
Definitely consider an external flat19" screen for home use, or light-weight
17" one if you want to be able to take it to clients places
(if you are lucky you may find a laptop that lets you use both screens
simultaneously)

Docking station is not likely to give a second screen facility if the PC
doesn't support it
I normally think of the docking station as simply a facility to bulk connect
in more peripherals to the computer motherboard,
rather than having them individually attached to the back of the laptop by a
nest of wires.
May save wear on the connectors and their mountings within the PC case.
Others may know, and hopefully tell, otherwise

USB or firewire - don't know as there is a technical reason to opt for
either for a hard drive, or camera
but USB 2 is the more common, and frequently provided interface,
so I'd go for that for my add-on devices

Also - do look at trackballs - especially nice for hands- off work
(presentations etc) with the laptop

Only four Word files!
I usually work with at least 3 open that are more than 20Mb each, plus 6 or
more small ones - the odd PDF or 2 and whatever application I am supposed to
be testing.

Technique I found useful - A single page word file with associated files as
icons on the page - and you can nest the pages so you can have 1 page for
the project, and that shows each location's presentation/working set - with
further sub-pages for multiple versions

>From what you describe as your work I would add at least 5Gb to the space
needed to allow for large documentation sets
and - do go the partitioned system route - especially if you are getting a
USB backup, 'cos it takes a long while to backup a 60GB drive via USB2, or
even direct S-ATA connection

And - I prefer backup to DVD, but avoid packet mode
Then there is no worry about 4Gb files, and long directory/file names.
