In the olden days we used to go to, darn I forget what they were called,
newsgroups or something like that, and they would take our calls and allow us to
look up information about whatever that newsgroup was for, but even then you
couldn't surf the net even if you were connected with another entity.
They were called Bulletin Board Systems (BBS's). Typically you'd dial directly
into one, connect at 300 baud, search the online files for something
interesting, and then download it. This was before the Internet and WWW.
