Depends on how you define standard DVD player :-) Not familiar with
Long Play mode on DVD.
Many DVD players now sport multiformat ability. Many have been able
to play VCD format, which is compressed.
VCD contains a compressed video file (.dat) and some other files
which allow the older DVD player to recognize it as VCD.
Say that you were to convert a proper DVD format to VCD (compressing)
and burned it to a DVD blank as .mpg files, many current DVD players
would be able to handle it. Any video format (DV or DVD) can be
compressed, but not without panelty in quality. Nero may be able to
format video for VCD.
There's also another compressed format: DivX which will allow you fit
more hrs onto a DVD blank. Bit more complicated.
