The Phllips DVP-642 is a nice unit. I can confirm it plays DivX/Xvid DVDs,
provided you use a certain trick. If the DVD plays with distorted, pixellated
colors, hit the system menu key on the remote. Then hit it again to
return to the video. The video will then play with proper colors.
The trick is mentioned on videohelp.com.
With DivX you can get around 12 hours per disk at typical rates.

There is also a simple hack by which one can disable the
region code limitation on the DVP-642 so you can play DVDs from
anywhere in the world.
The last part I've already done.
