Here is another reason to sell out and move on up to Vista via a new computer with Vista OEM already installed. Microsoft now says,

This one seems to have slipped under the radar. For many, anyway. Microsoft has decided that a new motherboard is equal to a new computer. This means that if you upgrade your mobo, you cannot reinstall your OEM copy of Windows.

The new license agreement says the following:

Chuck, I knew all this in 2002, when I bought my first personal XP-OEM
versions...
(I got four "dusty" FPPs from a dealer for Win-x, or retail upgrades, etc...)
Remember you GIVE UP the right to move the OS to a different computer
when you get the OS for HALF PRICE or less... (Compared to retail -- FPP)

Umm, side question... Is an OEM with - retail upgrade still an OEM?
(I don't think I ever had that combination...) (But we digress...)

I have mentioned the "MB thing" on this list in the past, but most people came
back with stories how MS was "kind and gentle" with them and they admitted
(not to point any fingers at anyone in particular, since I honestly do not
remember who said this) that they basically defrauded MS and lied their way
to a new OS key, OR (more kindly to other list members in question) MS
listened to the truth and IGNORED the FACT thay could have refused them
and let it SLIDE instead... (Maybe more of the latter, come to think of
it...!!!)

I always knew the "kind and gentle" stuff would end when MS got fed up
with all the people calling in wanting to "RE-CYCLE" their OS into a new
machine... (And it makes sense that would be happening now... My original
OEM XP machine is showing its age, parts-wise and is failure prone...)
If you "hold their feet to the fire" (as in stand your ground), IF you can
reproduce
the SAME features in a NEW computer, (Slow BUSS speed, slow RAM,
USB I, ATA66, etc.) THEN MS "HAS" to let you make a new machine and
use the old OEM OS since it would use almost all the old parts except the MB...
(Remember the part about no new features... That is the out for a user...)
(If I had the choice of a re-build with all my old parts and OEM-OS, on
a used (or old) MB for $30 or so, think I would speing for a new machine
in full? (I still ahve one 1.7G that is original and working fine...)

The problem with changing the MB (when using the "full WPA") is that with lots
of stuff integrated into the MB, you loose TONS of WPA points when it changes...
(This has been discussed before, so I won't go there...)
(I once "turned off" a NIC and lost my WPA since it "put me under"...)
(I restored a clone or Image, so did not have to "go begging" anywhere.)

I can tell MS is getting tighter on WPA since I just had a software problem on
my computer, and WPA kicked in and made me call in to the auto-phone
system number. I'm not sure - but I think repairs were not far enough along to
connect to the Internet at that time... (I did not want to get "locked out"
while I
had other problems I was working on, BUT it just shows that it CAN smack
you "upside the head" for no particular reason --- right at a very bad time...)
(No extra charge for the gratitious rant... <grin>)
