Sorry for that, it's that Hugh, too mean to get his own thread.

I'd suspect that the partition had got some files corrupted or deleted

Possibly a power glitch during closedown -
as a reboot, and recovery doesn't fix it,
and I presume you've run a check for malware
and got a backup of your data
then re-install is possibly the fastest option

Original message from Andy Cafferty:

Just booted my PC up after a 2 day break from it. When I shut it down,
everything was fine, now that I want it to restart, nothing works. The
thing boots into windows OK, but if I try to start a program, I get told
that windows can't open *whateveritry*.exe. Also, all my program links
don't work, they look like "Firefox.lnk" and when I click on them, I get an
error like above.

Same errors when I boot into safe mode and system restore doesn't make any
difference.

I have a parallell XP64 install that still works OK.

Any ideas on what to do?

Here was me thinking I had loads of replies to my question, but alas they

were mostly to someone else... Ah well...

If anyone remembers my original problem, the power off didn't work. I'll

reinstall Windows and see what happens.
