How old is that drive, which can't see them?  Bad cable would give 
you all kinds of weird problems, I suspect.

The drive may not be reading the id code on the CDRW disk - could be 
a weak laser.  Try another brand of CDRW disk.

I've heard of at least a couple real strange behavior of CD-R/W's.  
Not sure how they were resolved, as a person telling the story was 
not terribly technical.
