Subject: Re: Network Question
When I opened the message, I found that Marc Sims had written:
DHCP works like a phone directory by assigning randomly generated IP
addresses to a PC which the DHCP server creates.
DHCP is enabled on all three computers.
Is there something that I should look for in the ipconfiguration readout
that might point to why the two other computers cannot access the
LAPTOP?
When you use ipconfig you are querying the setup on that PC not any others.
What are the IP addresses shown by ipconfig for the LAPTOP and its gateway,
DHCP server, and DNS? What is the IP for MOM, DAD, and router? Can you
successfully ping using the IP addresses vs. the name from each to each? If
so, your problem is with name resolution on the internal network.
I don't remember if XP Home has a Local Security Policy selection in
Administrative Tools menu, does it? Come to think of it does it even have
Administrative Tools? Anyways, if it's there check the Security
Options/Network Access settings.
That's the problem with Home it's such a stripped down POS, MS never
expected the explosion of home networking when they designed it and it's not
ready for prime time.
