OK, keep in mind I didn't follow everything you were asked to try before so
if some of this is repeat please bear with me and send results anyway.
Couple of assumptions:
1. The computer name of the laptop is "laptop". If not, wherever you see
\\laptop, substitute the actual name.
2. The laptop is fully up to date on XP SP2 patches (per Windows Update, no
critical patches are recommneded), is running current and up-to-date AV
software, and scans cleanly with nothing found using at least one
anti-spyware program.
If the assumption (2) above is valid, continue...
On LAPTOP:
1. Make sure the XP firewall is disabled on the Local Area Network interface
that is active.
2. UNINSTALL any 3rd party firewall. Do not merely disable it, get it OUTA
THERE!
3. I'm presuming you've already run the network setup wizard on LAPTOP and
enabled file sharing there. If not, do that.
4. Open a CMD prompt and enter:
NET SHARE
and post the results of that command. If you get an error, you can stop.
Now, on DAD or MOM:
1. Open a CMD prompt and enter:
ping 192.168.0.2
If you see "timed out" that's a big problem, you can stop here.
2. Still at the CMD prompt, enter:
net view \\LAPTOP
If that fails try this:
net view \\192.168.0.2
and post the results noting which one of the above worked.
If you get a successful result in step 2 above, there's nothing that should
be preventing you from accessing the laptop in the usual way.
If you do all the testing on one computer (DAD or MOM) and it fails, make
sure you get the identical results on the other computer (MOM or DAD).
Then if it still doesn't work, explain again what you're doing at MOM or DAD
(in egregious detail) and what the error message(s) is/are (verbatim and
complete).
Oh, and if it's working, you don't need to send results of commands above of
course.

When I opened the message, I found that Carl Houseman had written:

I have three computers connected through a Netgear switch.
All are running XP-Home SP2.
Two of'em are eMachine Desktops and a Dell Notebook
They are named MOM, DAD and LAPTOP.
