Jim, you already have a router between your switched network of PCs and the
Internet - the one provided by your ISP. Adding another router isn't going
to fix anything that we've been talking about. Your problem has nothing to
do with routers, switches or MAC addresses.

Looking back over what you've told me, things appear to have changed
mid-stream. You first told me that the laptop was at 192.168.0.2. But when
you did a net view \\192.168.0.2, you got results that suggested that that
IP was on DADS.

Let's try this from each machine:
 net view \\192.168.0.1
 net view \\192.168.0.2
 net view \\192.168.0.3

and compare results (please post them). If one of those consistently fails
with the same failure you've been seeing, check
 IPCONFIG /ALL
on each machine and confirm which machine has the IP address which fails to
respond to NET VIEW. It will probably be the laptop, which means the
problem is still unknown, but at least we'll have re-established a
consistent report of how things are which is needed in order to go forward.

This assumes you want to continue debugging. One possible outcome I'm
starting to fear is this laptop problem may be too screwy to figure out over
E-mail. The solution of last resort is to wipe the hard drive and start
over with a fresh install of XP. It will definitely be faster, in terms of
elapsed time, to debugging over E-mail.

Carl

However, I'm using a SWITCH, not a ROUTER and AFIK, there is no
assignment of anything within it. And it isn't WIRELESS.

Might have to go to a router, though, since that laptop is giving me a pain.
I changed the name on it just in case that might be a problem and disabled
the firewall, but it's still not accessable.

I have a LinkSys DSL/Etnernet router laying around here that I used to
use. Don't know why I didn't use it instead of buying the switch. Can't
remember. Probably can't find the CD for it anyway <smile>.
