Al, once you retrieve your pictures, you might try a format of the card (in
the camera -- it is different when you format it in the computer, and
sometimes won't work properly after that, I understand), and then do some
testing with it (taking pictures that don't matter).  In my experience, they
sometimes have corrupt areas that reformatting will resolve.  Otherwise, try
a different SM card.  They are really cheap, and it might be worth the cost
to get the camera working reliably again.

Some of you suggested connecting my camera directly to the computer.  
There USED TO BE a serial cable, but it has gone missing.  However, 
there isn't a serial port that I can see on my computer.  I think I'll 
have to take it to a photo-developing place and see if they can get into 
it.
