I have a Olympus C740 and evidently never read the manual :( I always hook
the camera to the computer via the supplied usb cable, transfer the photos,
and delete them from the camera (from within windows). I have never removed
the memory card, tried to format or manipulate the photos from within
windows, and have never had any problems.

On a side note, I used this camera to take some pictures at my daughters
outdoor graduation. It is a 3MB camera with 10x optical zoom, and I was very
pleasantly surprised with the quality of the long, telephoto shots. They
were blurry in the eyepiece or lcd while trying to frame (or my eyes are
getting worse), but the actual pictures were surprisingly clear. I have
found, at least for this camera, that the lighting makes all the difference.
Outdoor shots with sun seem much better than indoor with muted light.

Just my experience and, of course, YMMV. It has worked for me, but I do not
guarantee it will work for you.
