The instructions that came with my Olympus camera (C720 -- several years
old) said specifically not to delete images in windows, only from the
camera.  FWIW.

Thanks Sharol.  When/if I retrieve my pictures, I'll try that.  I'm 
wondering if I screwed up the formatting by deleting the pictures using 
Windows Explorer, rather than the camera's delete button.  I did try a 
different SM card with no positive results, and will try again.  My 
friend (Google) sent me to Microsoft, and they suggest using Camedia 
software, which I'll try when I get a moment.
