FWIW,
I always take the Flash Card out of the camera, put it in the card reader and move the files to the Hard Drive. I have never had a problem in anyway and have all my pics stored on my hard drive. From there I retrieve them and name them using Thumbs Plus. Delete the bad ones.
Then I manipulate and print them using Corel Draw or Photoshop 7.

Thanks Sharol. When/if I retrieve my pictures, I'll try that. I'm wondering if I screwed up the formatting by deleting the pictures using Windows Explorer, rather than the camera's delete button. I did try a different SM card with no positive results, and will try again. My friend (Google) sent me to Microsoft, and they suggest using Camedia software, which I'll try when I get a moment.

Al, once you retrieve your pictures, you might try a format of the card (in
the camera -- it is different when you format it in the computer, and
sometimes won't work properly after that, I understand), and then do some
testing with it (taking pictures that don't matter). In my experience, they sometimes have corrupt areas that reformatting will resolve. Otherwise, try a different SM card. They are really cheap, and it might be worth the cost
to get the camera working reliably again.
