Having done one of each in the past 12 months... Very similar.
You do not need the sotware, but they try to make you do it. If
you're polite and convincing, and the guy you're talking to is in a
good mood (and knwolegable), it takes about 10 min at most.
DSL is a bit simpler with the new DSL modems, where you do not have
to deal with PPPoE. It's been "moved" to the DSL modem.
