Re not using packet writing software:

...
The problems are that the applications writing in packet mode do not comply
to a 'hard' standard, so you end up with file/directory entries written by
Roxio that are not readable by InCD, or XP.

I've been down that rutted lane and had to find a system with Roxio
installed in order to read the backups, and write them to new media as
sessions in order to read them on a system without Roxio.

A real pain!

...

My wife and her assistant had a need to transfer files of information back and forth from their software program which had the ability to write to a drive:\folder only. They used to use floppies, with all the inherent errors, for years until their files got too big to use a floppy. I then(about 3-4 years ago) got them some CD-RWs and setup each computer to burn and read using packet mode, I believe using Roxio. This caused all kinds of havoc and I was continually 'fixing' their drives that would get locked up from the packet mode software as well as occasionally not being able to read the disks.

I finally last year convinced them to try the USB thumb drives and bought them each one. I haven't heard a peep since! They've worked flawlessly now for almost a year. Her assistant wears one around her neck, leaves hers here and takes the old one and is on her way. Makes my life easier, too!
