Re not using packet writing software:

If you use a DVD-RAM, or RW media in the same manner as if it were a hard
drive - single, or batches of files added, deleted or changed, then you are
using packet mode.

If you write 'sessions' to the media as if it were a CD+/-R disc, as per
Nero etc. then that's not packet mode

The problems are that the applications writing in packet mode do not comply
to a 'hard' standard, so you end up with file/directory entries written by
Roxio that are not readable by InCD, or XP.

I've been down that rutted lane and had to find a system with Roxio
installed in order to read the backups, and write them to new media as
sessions in order to read them on a system without Roxio.

A real pain!

Unfortunately there are many formatting options allowed/required for video
and audio discs, if you want to be able to view them on the players that
output to TV.

So you'll have to get something like Nero if you want to put your pictures
on a CD/DVD in a mode that can be interpreted by those players!

I would seriously advise against using packet mode except on -RAM media
I would also advise against relying on a single device for backups - drop
the hard drive, lose the memory stick and if that was your only backup -
tuff.
Also remember that when you add to the data on one of those devices the main
storage allocation and directories get altered - 1 error writing, or
lightning strike near when it's in use and you could lose all the data to
the point where the thing may need reformatting

Backups - to CD or DVD as single closed sessions, even if you are using RW
media so you can re-use them later, after your next full backup
