I'm trying to figure out whether my old laptop has a problem with certain
wireless cards or WTH is going on. Unfortunately, I have no one from whom I
can readily borrow a newer laptop to test with.
With a Netgear WGT624v3 router and WG511T PC card, I get 7 Mbps upload
speeds.
With a D-Link DI-624 router and DWLG650 PC card, I got around 9 Mbps upload
speeds.
Download speeds are as expected, 22-24Mbps at about 70 feet through several
walls. No complaint there.
Speeds were measured by the Task Manager's Networking tab, while xcopying a
very large file from/to a Windows 2003 server on the router's switch port.
It appears the upload throughput hits a wall. There is no lack of
throughput when copying from another computer on a switch port to the same
2003 server.
I have another off-brand and discontinued (Viewsonic) 108Mbps wireless card
that makes 12Mbps uploading to either its matching router w/108Mbps
connection, or to the Netgear router with only a 54Mbps connection. So I
know the router is not the issue. If I got 12Mbps uploads out of the
others I'd be satisfied if not impressed.
All routers and wireless cards were running the latest flashware and
drivers.
If you have used consumer grade 108 or 125 Mbps technology from the big 4
(D-Link, Belkin, Netgear, Linksys) and measured upload speeds, could you
drop me a private note with what you found? I'm ready to buy about 5
wireless PCI NICs and if the Netgear or D-Link PCI NICs have the same upload
throttle that I've seen with their PC cards, it's going to be a big
disappointment.
And I know about Wireless N but that's not cheap enough nor
standards-approved yet so it's not in the running.
Thanks,
Carl
