Gee if I had known we were going all the way back to 98 (clipped) ;-) If the drive is NTFS there is nothing simple about copying as a 98 machine won't even see it even if you could connect it up inside a 98 machine.

I don't know if this relates to the rest of this thread,
(I've been busy --- not reading it), but
I use the following for seeing NTFS in 98 and ME.

Never wanted to write there, so I only have the free
read-only version...  (It sometimes gets a little cranky
if you try too...)
It needs files from a newer OS, which you need to be
licensed for yourself... (They explain all that.)
It is something for a medium or advanced "geek"...
