Here is a problem which may or may not be solved by Win4Lin.
I want to be able to monitor program usage without the user being able to
change the settings.
Now for Linux this is fairly easy since you can place the appropriate
commands in the shell and maintain the log this way. If I just want to
monitor the program usage of the entire W4L process, this should also be
easy since W4L is just a Linux process.
But if I want to monitor the usage of various different Windows programs -
which I will need separately - presumably I have to install a hook in the
registry somewhere that will enable the individual program use to be
monitored. (I am not a Windows expert by any means, as you will gather!).
My question to the W4L community is:
Is is possible to ensure that the user cannot change any of the settings
of such a program? eg by putting that part of the registry on a
write-protected drive etc., and still ensure that the program will always
look at the correct location?
The overall consumption (including of space) can be monitored from Linux
and the consumption reported back to the user at logout time.
The alternative would be to mount a separate NT box, which would be too
expensive and much more complicated to have to administer two facilities.
A VMware solution would be equally as complicated, although saving on
hardware requirements.
TIA
John
