This is quite a thread.

I think the financial arguments completely miss the point.  There are many more complicated relationships that those noted by Paul and we find a way to sort them out legally - they are not a reason to make something illegal or prohibited by the Constitution.

To go to the extreme - it could be argued that children covered as dependents under a medical plan raise the costs and the complexity of the plan, so let's make having children illegal.  Total hogwash.  First we decide that it's OK, even a good thing, to have children, then we figure out a way to cover them and account for them.

Same with gay marriages - first we say it's OK for these folks to have equal rights with the rest of us, including marriage and children, then we figure out how to accommodate those rights.

As for children of a gay couple born by a third woman - this is no different from a surrogate mother for a childless heterosexual couple.  And yes there are legal entanglements, but we sort them out because we want to.
