The distance is shorter and it saves time exiting I90 at Lewiston and then
taking 14 into the commercial harbor.

The reconstruction of Pelzer with a new bridge over the railroad is based on
the assumption that 14 will continue to be the primary truck route to the
barge harbor. I think it's way past time to change things now.

BTW: There is no provision for bicycle travel through the Riverview Drive
and Theurer intersection which is on the so-called main east-west bicycle
route. Painting bike symbols on the shoulder of a street when that shoulder
disappears at intersections might be acceptable in town, but not when
traffic is moving at highway speeds, especially when the shoulder is used as
a passing lane as is the case on Riverview Drive. Of course, integrating
bicycles into a high speed intersection is a challenge, so it's just not
being attempted.

Our Mayor likes to officiate at bicycle event podiums, and the CVB tries to
pass Winona off as a bicycle destination, but except for the recreational
path around the lake and the Gilmore Creek bridge, there is minimal planning
for bicycles as transportation. For instance: no bicycle access to the
middle school. A dedicated path separate from highways could link Goodview's
LaCain Park with our downtown riverfront and Prairie Island campground and
also serve as a bicycle commuting route. Our local truck driver/riverfront
developer got the city to lengthen the planned Pelzer bridge to accommodate
his future projects, but bicycling understandably lacks such clout. Does
anyone know if any of our city officials ever ride a bicycle?
