Terrific discussion all! I'm enjoying it very much. We should talk out
transportation issues when we have the chance to make an impact, and now
might be such a time.

First, a bit about bicycles...it just kills me that the promised bike path
to the middle school has not been built...we are lucky no one has been
killed...for one boy it was close. We need to get this done. As for
Pelzer, I was told that bikes were taken into consideration, and after
seeing the Gilmore Avenue bridge I figured that meant more than painted
icons. Was I sold a bill of goods? Boonestroo maps show an extra deck on
the overpass for bikes, but I am unclear how they figure into the
Pelzer/Theurer intersection...or 61/14 for that matter.

On 14 the only true solution would be to elevate the roadway and eliminate
the Knopp and Gilmore and SMU intersections...then drop it down to meet that
new South Service Drive...sounds expensive, and you'd need to develop new
access points for the traffic to and from those ares...not to mention the
folks at University Village might not want an elevated highway for a
neighbor. I think a traffic light at that intersection is a bad idea. It
is right at the bottom of the hill...not a good thing...drivers turning on
to 14 down there should be a little scared...it keeps them looking.

As long as we don't want trucks in the central city, 14 and Pelzer will be
the way to bring them in. I disagree with the writer, however, who said
that the 61/43 intersection couldn't support truck traffic...it can and
does. The writer reported having waited 2-3 cycles to turn left onto 61 off
43. I have had to wait at that intersection an extra interval a grand total
of twice...much less frequently than at 61/14.

Necessity being the mother of invention, I discovered an existing truck
route that I don't think I've ever used before. On Sunday the parade had
the whole east end messed up, so I followed Bruski to Louisa...you jog a
couple of blocks west after the tracks and there is this beautiful route
that curves right onto Fourth Street. If we do develop a new 61
intersection that feeds onto Louisa, this route could be developed to keep
trucks off Mankato.

Not a traffic planner, just a great thinker.
