While I may not always agree with School Board decisions, I do think they are grossly underpaid for the time and service they give to the community.
In my opinion, School Board salaries should at least be closer to the City Council range. I hope people realize how much time they give.
Their marathon meetings are nothing compared to the phone calls, e-mails, personal visits, and other meetings they attend. They really do work hard at what they do.
Ed or someone else, do you know what is the salary range for School Board members across the state?
Dwayne and others,
As I recall from when the school board discussed this a couple of years ago, compensation varies significantly but we are very near, if not at, the bottom. Small districts typically pay a per diem of about $50 per meeting, with either a higher per diem or an additional lump sum for chair, clerk, treasurer, etc. $200 to $300 per month is probably typical of Minnesota districts our size. At the other end, the highest of which I am aware are large suburban districts: White Bear Lake pays its board members over $4,000/year and Bloomington pays over $7,000/ year, both significantly higher for officers.
