While I agree that having diversity on the board provides greater input into
the process I truly question who is willing and able make the time to serve
verses the desire. How many board members have the time or make the
commitment, even if it means using their vacation days from their regular
jobs, to sit through the salary contract negotiations every other year. Do
you delegate 85%+ of the educational expenses to a hired outside negotiator?
Do you put that major issue on the back of the Superintendent? Do you not
travel and attend the other regional school board meetings to exchange
information with other boards? Do you not sit in on the many Committee
meetings or attend an expulsion meeting with a parent and staff to see a
parent who doesn't care what happens to their kid? Are you willing and able
to take time off your job during the day for school business and then work
late at night or weekends on your job to get caught up?
Serving on any board, like anything in life, means it is a priority in ones
life and you feel you can make a difference. We do what we feel we need to
do in life and have the passion to want it bad enough. If it is for your
kids you will find away and being a single mom, while more challenging, will
not stop you if the is a fire in the belly to serve.
And if the fire is not there to commit the effort to do the best job, work
the hours necessary, to build consensus and to help shape the direction
don't ask for my vote especially if money is the motivation or if they have
an ax to grind, without solutions.

Yes, people should step up to the plate and serve, but do you look at
who really does that? People who have time and a decent income. Impossible
when you work at a low wage job.
Compensation is necessary if you really want representation. Think of
the impact a single mom who has kids in the school district would be on a
board? They are living the life under those rules and regulations and would
have incredible insights.
If you want democracy, you need to level the board and make it possible
for all people to participate. If you don't need the compensation, then
