The toughest part of that connection is riding bikes across the Interstate bridge. An active biking committee exists. Members have been busy planning and acquiring easements for trails. With the leadership of this committee, the city intends on completing a bike/pedestrian bridge and to the middle school area and tying into the levee. Their plan is to put a trail on top of flood control levee around the community. Not all of those easements have been agreed to, as needed to build that trail. I suspect that they are very open to others volunteering their time and ideas. Please contact one of the following people for further information about the committee. It's not like anyone will be harming Paul because he chooses not to walk or ride. I probably won't be riding my bike to work either since I live 10 miles out of town, but that doesn't mean I don't think that it is bad to encourage biking and walking. I lived in Madison, WI for 5 years without a car--I walked or biked or bussed and managed just fine (other than trips to the grocery store or laundromat, which were a little challenging at times)! Isn't Winona a place with enough foresight to plan and vision our community to meet the needs of a variety of residents? If there was a comprehensive needs assessment of a representative sample of citizens (from Chamber members to the regulars at Blanch's Tavern), couldn't we identify the top priorties on citizens' minds? If we found that increasing biking/walking AND having a drag strip made top marks, couldn't we agree to pursue making both a reality? Can we get out of this win/lose, either/or discussion? Is democracy only about who is most forceful in getting what they want or is it really about representing the whole community's interests?
