To the Bike Trail and Aghaming Park Advocates;

Has anyone on the Bike Trail Committee or at city hall reviewed the deeds of the many parcels donated to the city by Latsch? You will find some interesting covenants/restrictions with regard to land use for what is now Aghaming Park. I would highly recommend it. Copies are available at the county recorders office. We should respect the wishes and intentions of Mr. Latsch, especially considering his many generous donations to the city. Mike Kirschmann [EMAIL PROTECTED]

To advocates of biking.

An active biking committee exists. Members have been busy planning and
acquiring easements for trails. With the leadership of this committee,
the city intends on completing a bike/pedestrian bridge and to the
middle school area and tying into the levee. Their plan is to put a
trail on top of flood control levee around the community. Not all of
those easements have been agreed to, as needed to build that trail.

I suspect that they are very open to others volunteering their time and
ideas. Please contact one of the following people for further
information about the committee.
Brian Buelow, Steve Nagel, Tom Stoa, Pat Woodworth

Please note that the Pelzer street project will also include a
bike/pedestrian trail.
Plans are also in the works for trails on Aghaming park.

So obviously Paul isn't even close to changing his lifestyle, but that
doesn't mean that the idea of increasing biking and walking is bad for
all
or bad for Winona, just something that Paul isn't interested in. It's
not
like anyone will be harming Paul because he chooses not to walk or ride.
I
probably won't be riding my bike to work either since I live 10 miles
out of
town, but that doesn't mean I don't think that it is bad to encourage
biking
and walking. I lived in Madison, WI for 5 years without a car--I walked
or
biked or bussed and managed just fine (other than trips to the grocery
store
or laundromat, which were a little challenging at times)!

Isn't Winona a place with enough foresight to plan and vision our
community
to meet the needs of a variety of residents? If there was a
comprehensive
needs assessment of a representative sample of citizens (from Chamber
members to the regulars at Blanch's Tavern), couldn't we identify the
top
priorties on citizens' minds? If we found that increasing
biking/walking
AND having a drag strip made top marks, couldn't we agree to pursue
making
both a reality?

Can we get out of this win/lose, either/or discussion? Is democracy only

about who is most forceful in getting what they want or is it really
about
representing the whole community's interests?

I hate to walk and the only bikes I want to ride better have a motor.
My
life is a whole lot busier and I get enough exercise in the work day to
even
consider bikes or walking after work hours recreation or necessary.

The less time it takes me to get from point "a" to point "b" the better.

Sorry but my idea of relaxation is falling asleep under a shade tree or
playing with the things with cylinders.

Now, if Winona only had a 1/4 mile drag strip beside the airport now
that
would be music to my ears!

"Something is just broken in our social paradigm. The peoples penchant
for
driving everywhere is part of it. If more people would just leave their
cars
at
home, bicycle, walk or bus to work it would make a difference. Less use
of
cars
would bolster the public transportation (bus) effort and make it better.
Heck,
we might even become more healthy!"
