Your Opinion is appreciated. However the subject is Germaine since it is a
common problem and a common interest to learn how to conduct a site survey,
It is educational and certainly enhances the understanding of wireless
networks and communication to have the practical ability to establish a
instant network.
While you may not like this cause, you may someday depend upon the knowlege
gained by people like them. Another real potential use for the knowlege
gained is in a disaster situation. Earthquake in particular.
Theses skills gained may allow someone to communicate critical information
in a disaster.

I recommend you.
Look for "Wardriving" when you get the right equipment to do that, you can
designate a few of your participants to scan the area once you know the
location.
This means getting a card like Orinoco gold, and an (optional)external
antenna and simply going to the site and logging the AP's found. Then you
map those sites for future use. Another Keyword is "warchalking" this would
seem the best approach for your Idea.
Use a decent search engine for background look to the list (BAWUG) archives
for details.
