I started using this service recently as well. i am so glad they dropped the per minute and per MB cellular like service charges. Unlimited is so much nicer.
They do mention on their site that you should use a VPN or some kind of tunneling. That is one method that I am currently using. Using port forwarding with PuTTY is pretty simple for establishing a secure POP session on win32. MacSSH will allow classic macs to do the same and OSX and all of the other *nix OSes can use OpenSSH. A full VPN solution would be better for full coverage. Of course for either solution you will have to have another end to connect to. If you do not, you will be left with /just/ doing the typical wired security things. Depending on you OS, these differ but the ideas are the same. Turn sharing off. Turn unneeded services off. Use some kind of packet filter (pf, ipf, ipfw) or firewall (such as the one that comes with windoze or a comercial product). WEP should only be viewed as keeping the honest honest. No matter what kind of machine you are running on any kind of network, you should do as many of the above as possible. If you are sending super top secret information, a public network probably isnt a good idea in the first place. ;) But to answer the question, use a VPN when you can, SSH tunnels are easy to do provided you have access to a server with ssh services and no matter if you do the above or not, try to secure your machine in as many ways possible. hope that helps some :) stone -- general wireless list, a bawug thing <http://www.bawug.org/> [un]subscribe: http://lists.bawug.org/mailman/listinfo/wireless
