Small home users shouldn't be exposing their "intranet type" shares.
VPN servers are getting really cheap: Dlink DI804V http://www.dlink.com/products/broadband/di804v/ $109 Linksys BEFSX41 http://www.linksys.com/products/product.asp?grid=34&scid=29&prid=433 $100 These days, you need to use encryption when connecting from outside your network. That wired connection in that hotel for example could be "shared" with people you don't know. I've even seen some hotels interconnect via wireless WAN links that weren't very safe. Obviously, the cheaper products aren't as capable as the big enterprise VPN servers but they should be good enough for most users. They are getting better with each firmware version and it's amazing what they can pack in a small hardware-based $100 device! Now, if IEEE 802.11i was a little quicker with things, it would make our lives a lot easier... :) ...
