George, They both need to be in either PtP mode (in this case you have to punch in the mac of the other unit) or in PtMP mode.
Although I do not understand why you preffer that setup over clasic infrastructure : 1 in Access point mode and the other in AP Client mode. If you have the same ssid on both then you are set.
