Hi Robert

Thanks for all the suggestions.

1) The old terrain gen was reported to be broken so we searched for an intermediate alternative 2) We've found that in the LKM file archive that Paolo maintains and modified the files to work with XCSoar v6.0 3) I've developed a replacement for the old terrain gen, but it isn't entirely working yet 4) We have found someone else that is helping us getting the new map generator to work

Until that last part is finished we can only offer the pregenerated maps, but the old terrain gen is still available on:
http://www.xcsoar.org/download/mapgen/

However I can't promise that it works, as Scott Penrose is the only one with access to that server.

Hi everyone,

the days of using our broken terrain generator are finally over!
We have created a set of pregenerated maps for almost all the important
gliding areas. The maps are based on the LK8000 maps and therefore
use the same topology, that is taken from the the OpenStreetMap project
(http://www.openstreetmap.org). You can download the maps from the
following webpage:

Thanks very much for the effort taken in upgrading the map system.

I do have a few problems though...caused mostly I suppose by Australia being such a massive place...

    * I fly mostly in SE Qld and the new map for that area cuts off
the coastal area - so flying into/out of Caboolture (YCAB) takes
      you off the map.
    * For some flights south, I will need to change maps in mid air
      and I don't think that's possible
    * Also, there are areas that are not covered at all - for example
around Alice Springs in central Australia and in central &
northern Australia (Bundaberg, Rockhampton, Townsville and the
Gulf of Carpentaria - Morning Glory country).
    * The NSW/Vic map also doesn't seem to cover Byron Bay
    * Flying in South Australia, flights frequently go east some way
into Vic - and again a map change is needed. Also, there are
frequent excursions up into the Flinders range, outside map
      coverage.
    * There is no map coverage for Tasmania.

Whilst the old terrain generator may have been buggy, it had the great advantage of creating maps based on user need. Is there any intention to upgrade the terrain generator to the new system? If not, how do we create the maps that we need for flights that cross map boundaries or for flights in areas with no maps?
