Hi Rob,
Simply to know where the landing spot is supposed to be quickly and
possibly highlight hazards.
The landing sites I have in my DB have comments like, "EW strip Parallel to
the road, south of the Hangar" or "Power line across the SW of the paddock"
sometimes there are no comments. Many of the sites are what we call
"Agriculture Fields" that are rarely used, The AG fields are not easy to
locate, generally we look at the fertiliser dumps (white) usually placed at
the up hill side of the strip or signs of the grass being worn by the prop
wash in a symmetric pattern.
Easy access to a picture with the strip marked on would be a great help in
quickly and precisely identifying where the strip is "supposed" to be. It
does not eliminate the need to do the proper checks for suitability but
reduces the effort and workload on the pilot.
Of course displaying an unmarked aerial or satellite picture of what you
see from the cockpit is not very useful, to have some value the pics need
to be marked and obstacles highlighted eg: power lines etc..
I think each person should maintain the images for the sites where they
fly, distributing the aerial photography found on the net has issues with
the copyright. XCSoar could provide the ability to display pictures, we as
users decide which pictures we like to display.
Cheers
Jax
