Yes, absolutely -- it should be a rendering option and should not affect 
anything in the file.
The unfortunate issue is that a sequence of trapezoids has one extra 
width parameter (because the number of vertices is one more than the 
number of segments).

Yes, this is very likely the case. Still, I would have imagined that 
lines are a lot faster than polygons; perhaps this is not so true 
anymore in the presence of line widths and antialiasing.
