Amandla to the way the discussion is going. The first thing is to note that I was not defending any individual but raising the context within which the debate should be centred.
Firstly, it is important to note that the student movement is a core component of our movement, we used to refer to COSAS as the playground of politics. The ANC Youth League has a responsibility to make sure that we have a strong COSAS that will serve as the feeder for the ANC Youth League and SASCO. When we remove the core politics of the Congress movement from the reach of COSAS members, myself and all of you are failing part of our responsibilities to transfer whatever knowledge and understanding of the movement and our revolution. The NDR is under siege because we are not educating the generations that must carry the baton with us, and we seek to critique without adding value into the organisation that carried some of us into the depths of this revolution. To be able to understand how all the components of the Mass democratic movement complement each other, we must fight for the strengthening of the knowledge base within COSAS and we must seek to diminish all elements that might be counter to our purpose. To come to the current generation of COSAS, we must first look at how COSAS operates and how it has eveolved over the years. Before, we knew those before us would give us workshops and impart the necessary skills. Currently, that cannot be said as we become convocants of the association in congresses and we fail to guide them in their branches. The current membership does not understand why an SG must not be a student but must be an associate member of COSAS. That is the guiding tenet within the Constitution, that the SG of COSAS is fulltime and is an associate member. The reality is that our congresses are degenerating to personalities and we are not allocating the major energies to policy work that must be implemented by the leaders. Through the eye of the needle cannot be a measure for COSAS but a guiding tool which cannot be applied correctly in COSAS. Who is a tried and tested member of COSAS? I would not be able to say, but I can say there are some within the ranks of COSAS who can and are able to lead. Withstanding the fact that it would also be dependent on the membership of COSAS. I cannot speak as an authority on COSAS but I feel I have raised some of the issues that might be relavant to the discussion.
