Cdes et al Let me first applaud comrades for their enthusiasm in debating the issue. It is not correct to enter the debate by looking at who laid the charge. The objectivity in this case was to look at the merit of the charges. To me, whether SASCO did not reprimand Malema then is immaterial. The verdict of the case tells a good story on women emancipation and the dangers of patriarchy. The statement by SASCO is very clear and does not need interpretation. I do not agree with the assertion that those comrades who are at the wrong side of law should be blindly supported solely because they lead structures of our movement. If SASCO misread the situation then and correct it now, what becomes wrong with it. SASCO is an independent organisation that is guided by its constitution and its traditions. Nothing in the constitution of SASCO speaks about it being a student wing of any other structure. We should then respect that. Those who are preoccupied with leaderdship and successions should not force views and resolutions of structures to be aligned with a certain faction within the ANC. The difference between independence and autonomity is very huge and should be clarified once and for all. Independence means that the structure can take whatever decision it deems fit to take in achieving its vision. While, autonomy refers to the powers to run an organisation in line with the mother organisation. A clear example of autonomous structures is the ANCYL and YCLSA. ANCYL can not take decisions that contradict decisions of the ANC, YCLSA cannot take decisions that are contrary to those of the SACP. In fact decisions of the ANC automatically binds the ANCYL and decisions of SACP automatically binds the YCLSA. Thus, both these structures are not independent from their mother-bodies but autonomous to run indepedently in line with the vision and resolutions of their mother-bodies. They can as well influence the decisions of their mother-bodies. The above is not applicable to SASCO. It is not handled or bound by a decision of any structure. It operates with the CC approach that guides its interaction with all structures and institutions within society. It has no influence to the decisions of this structures and institutions. It independently invites progressive structures to its gatherings but does not choose for the structures on who should be sent. In line with the CC approach, it can differ with any statements made by the deployee of the structure(s) it invited. In 1997, SASCO rejected gear in its national conference. It rejected the selfish accumulation system without fear. It is progressively in support of everything that benefits the poor and the working class. It advocates for free education, better students' services, access to higher and further education etc. without looking at who is leading this institutions. It cannot be silenced today because a progressive decision by a court to fight patriarchy involves the invincible JM. I applaud the leadership of SASCO for living what it always stands for. The revolution cannot be handled with velvet gloves. It is a mammoth responsibility of the progressive structures to keep it in shape lest we take our country to a banana republic. Since its establishment to date, SASCO has jeolously kept the political compas that guides its action and that is working class biasness. I remain.... "Ignorant men don't know what good they hold in their hands until they've flung it away." -Sophocles >>> Lungisa Mzizana <[email protected]> 3/16/2010 6:08 PM >>> In the current political discourse everyone is mobilised to be an "cheer leader" no more shall have any analysis that can be objective in discussions, An analysis is either aligned with a certain faction or with the "leadership debate" that se em to pre-occupie everyone in our movement. South African Student Congress is an Autonomous structure within the Progressive Youth Alliance and it therefore reserve its right to engage on any political debates with no consultation of anyone hence the release of the press statement, the statement is inline with the respect of the state institutions and understanding the judgement in its entirety. It is not an attack to the President of the Youth League but an objective anlysis of the judgement by the Equality court and the statement has got nothing to do with the leadership debate of 2012, if one argues that SASCO is engage in such then that person should be consistent with the analysis and go through the recent press release of SASCO, from the statement on the Alliance after the Special Congress of the SACP,on Minister Shabangu, to the statement on Minister Nyanda, further to the statement on the President of Youth League and be consistent in the analysis, but not to pick a particular statement an grandstand with it in a quest of political relevance, But the matter is everyone is eager that South African Students Congress should be its ally in their plan of stuffling debates in the interest of particular faction, which this pose a danger in the entire movement and create an organisation that cant criticaly engage on any issue but is surrounded with "yes leaders". SASCO remains an Autonomous student organisation which is neither a student wing nor a baby of any organisation and therefore we shall continue to occupy our space with no fear of any individual who would seek political relevance with us.... My initial thought on the matter was to question how a supposedly progressive student formation can ever celebrate a verdict on a complaint laid by the liberal and racist Afriforum on one of its own. How does a PYA component resort to joining the opposition in its attack against another PYA leader within the MDM. Perhaps more puzzling is that the alleged ‘hate speech’ was said at a SASCO gathering, and SASCO as an organization failed to correct or reprimand Julius at that very gathering last year, let alone raise its dissatisfaction. Instead his articulations where met with delight and cheers from the audience including its leadership. This mischievousness with the truth or sudden amnesia of the occurrence of events by SASCO is questionable, and can only be deduced to reflect the highest form of grandstanding and opportunism. The only conclusion one gathers from this is that the leadership of SASCO is in a desperate attempt or quest to position itself along the current 2012 debacles (inspite of the 16th National Congress resolution against such), to the extent that it dishonestly conjures up and clings to an event in history it had no problems with. The tone and attacks on the ANCYL in the latest press releases sent under the name of SASCO from the YCL Press Release account is perhaps a guiding clue to the real misdemeanor behind the monkey business.
