Chris,

I'm intrigued and drawn to Quaker Meeting. I have not gone yet.

There is a Meeting here in Tucson on Sunday mornings: 8 AM and 10 AM, MST.
Sometime!!

It's quiet sitting, in pews or chairs. And there are vocalizations when a
person is so moved. This absolutely fascinates me, and seems a wonderful way
of practice. I shall attend, and will someday make a report.

My intro to Quaker practice is the wonderful book, a classic, and very
friendly: Howard Brinton; FRIENDS FOR 300 YEARS (1952). Just even the title
alone puts a smile on my face! The chapters on the Meeting, and on Vocal
Ministry are truly wonderful. I love Brinton's writing, he is clear and
helpful, and the spirit comes through the description; he's like D. T. Suzuki,
that way.

Every modern writer on Quaker practice refers to this 60-year old book.

If you've been in Zen circles a long time, as I have, you'll find much that is
familiar in Quaker practice. You probably know all this. ;-)

PS We were taught in our Tucson sangha for 24 years by a dharma heir of Robert
Aitken Roshi who was also a Catholic Redemptorist Priest, Patrick Hawk, Roshi.
He passed away a month ago. Pat headed Zen Sesshin at our zendo as well as
Christian Contemplative retreats at his retreat center at Picture Rocks (AZ).
The trappings and the sitting were identical; the teaching used different
symbols and references.
