I saw a National Geographic program in which scientists hooked up ECG monitors to plant flowers. They submitted the plants to a series of tests, including stroking its leaves, talking to it, shouting at it, etc. Their machines detected no change in electrical impulses--until one of the scientists tried to cut the plant. As soon as his scissors touched the plant, there was an intense spike in electrical activity. The program was explicitly non-outcome oriented, i.e., not forming any conclusions, but it certainly begged some questions about plant consciousness that piqued my curiosity.
