A kid with a respect for the Law would just wait.  Some do.

Like me: I did not take a drink in New Jersey until I was 21. 

I went just across the bridge to New York, where at 18 it was legal.

PS (My Dad bought me my first "New Jersey" draught beer at a simple 
neighborhood working-man's bar on my 21st birthday.  It was lovely.  We walked 
the one block from the old family house, to there, and back, and then continued 
the party at home.  Then I went out with friends.  Ooh, days gone by... ).  
Still respecting the Law (in most respects).  ;-)
