Because consciousness is directly linked to ego. Examples:
1. I am happy (or I am aware that I am happy)
2. I am hungry (or I am aware that I am hungry)
Consequently, if enlightnement means the dissolution of ego, it
means that, at least in principle, an enlightned person should not be
aware that she is enlightened. In other words, a person who claims
that she achieved enlightnement can only be mistaken.
Someone said once: `If you ever see the buda, kill him`. And
Dogen himself, in the fukanzazengui, says that the ideal practice is
the practice in which you are not worried about becoming enlightned.
