i understand what your saying, most people are brought up from birth to feel pain, sorrow, anger, or any other negative emotion when a tragedy occurs. I, myself was brought up this way. Dont get me wrong i would feel these emotions to if something happened to my family but i am also working on my inner self to deal with tragedies in a different way than usual. Right now i try to watch what my thoughts are doing so i can understand the problem inside myself. one thing i have noticed is that i hold onto negative thoughts and try to keep them as my own. i am learning that they do not belong to me and i need to let them go, if they come back let them go again and again etc...... this is where i think depression exists, it exists in people who do not want to let go of negative thoughts and keep them living inside themselves forever. i dont know if this helps but its what i come up with for now.
