Well, yeah. ALL the points about zen practice are about one's personal life!
You've said unhelpfully that this is tricky. Yeah, it is 'bout as tricky as
every other choice we make.

Subject: RE: [Zen] What is a Teacher?

There doesn't seem to be any alternative to discussing Zen as we each see
it. This sounds good to me. A discussion of how a teacher might "squeeze"
a student (for lack of a better term, at the moment), or how this works
between students, possibly even, or experiences of this sort... I think
this would all be very interesting and possibly awareness-expanding for
understanding Zen practice.

When it goes beyond discussion, to attempting to actually practice "the
squeeze" here, I just think this forum cannot provide the proper context.

I wouldn't want to paint myself into the corner that participation is all
about just discussing our ideas about Zen, while not putting them into
practice in the forum participation itself. What do I write? It seems to
be a question of first knowing my mind, and then reflecting on how cause
and effect might operate here. Not an easy question, and I'm bound to get
it wrong sometimes.

This is why I think a default of making one's point, without getting
"personal" seems safest, to me. If it so happens that the very point we
want to address is a question of someone's personal life, then this is a
very tricky thing to do in a way that will allow the person to receive it
without raising the iron wall of self defense and opening the gun ports.
