How do you mark the passage of time while sitting alone?

I've been using an incense stick as a measure of the length of a sitting
period, but wonder if there's something that doesn't require my looking at
it (either "too early" or "too late").

Some people use an alarm clock, but I find the alarm sound ... well, rather
alarming. What other methods have you found to alert yourself that it's time
to get up and go?
